Criteria for Gateway’s Faculty Dream Team.

Knowledgeable about Autism OR Receptive to Learning about Autism. A must have—no compromises. Select individuals with a solid, working knowledge of ASD, preferable with a history of success teaching or interacting with this population.

An Effective Communicator & Listener. Willing and able to say what needs to be said in a concise manner, while respecting others’ point of view. Can listen to opposing thoughts and ideas without becoming defensive or argumentative.

A Positive, I Love These Kids Personality. Look for team members who embrace the challenges that autism can present, and have a can-do attitude through good times and bad.

Active Engagement. Freely shares information with the family and other team members; expresses honest opinions at meetings; actively participates with the students and family.

Open Door Attitude. Is available when needed to help the family; knows when to step in with advice and/or constructive criticism and when to take a “wait and see” approach.

Flexible Thinking. Ability to compromise with little or no stress when needed; not wedded to one point of view; can evaluate pros and cons of a situation; resists “this is the way we always do it” thinking patterns.

A Problem-Solver. Able to openly discuss problems and offer action-oriented ideas to overcome any obstacle; can think outside the box when needed; focused on solutions rather than blame or fault-finding.

Reliable & Dependable. Can meet deadlines, schedules, assignments without compromising the quality of interaction with the child, family or team.

Respectful and Supportive. Able to maintain a professional attitude in all situations; understands the value of a sense of humor; regularly offers honest, positive encouragement to other team members and the students.

Committed to the Team and the Students. Focused on the reason the team was created; the success of the students with ASD.
